Ant – A Modern & Flat GTK Theme for Linux Desktops

Sorry, customization buffs. It has been a while since I wrote on any themes and that is because I haven’t seen anyone that I think is worth telling you all about yet. But yesterday, I came across a beautiful GTK theme that I can’t seem to get enough of. It’s called Ant.

Ant is a flat GTK theme that looks like a unity of Arc, Adapta, and Numix. It is based on the modern desktop theme suite, EvoPop and thus its mostly flat look with a minimal use of shadows to illustrate depth.

It is available in 3 color variants:

  • Ant – light color scheme, with red highlight.
  • Ant Dracula – dark color scheme with pink highlight and green accents.
  • Ant Bloody – a mix of dark and light schemes with red highlights and green accents.

Features in Ant

  • Minimalist design
  • Shadows for depth
  • Requires Gtk 3.20+

It’s obvious that the window controls in all three variants are macOS-inspired. I imagine some Linux users wouldn’t like it but I do. It fits the flat and minimalist design in my opinion.

If you are down with how Ant looks then here are the steps to set it up on your workstation:

  • Download your preferred variant from GNOME-Look.
  • Extract the zip file to the ~/.themes/ directory in your Home folder

To set the theme in Gnome, run the following commands in Terminal,

$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme "Ant"
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.wm.preferences theme "Ant"

Alternatively use GNOME/Unity Tweak Tool to select Ant theme.

How much do you like Ant theme? Can we add it to our list of the most beautiful themes available for Linux? Drop your thoughts in the comments section.

  2. Hey, man. Nice post. Could you consider providing more screenshots in your articles though? Maybe a slideshow widget would do well, since it wouldn’t really pollute the screen.
