Ubuntu Mate happens to be one of the official flavors of Ubuntu and launched together with the main Ubuntu distribution with the Unity DE and the rest of the flavors which debuted yesterday the 21st of April as originally scheduled.
As it happens, Ubuntu Mate features the Mate DE that is supposed to give you that pleasant feel of a classically GUI while still aesthetically pleasing and customizable.
A lot has been changed in Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and they include a new software center dubbed software boutique, support for most of Gnome 3.18 applications (such as clocks, weather, photos, disks, etc), support for docklets, Mate desktop 1.12, Synapse has been baked in with a Unity style panel layout to the Mate Tweak tool (to give you desktop a Unity feel), and a generic long-term support Linux Kernel 4.4.
What’s more, GUVCVIEW has been replaced by Cheese as the default webcam viewer; default applications include the usuals like Caja, Firefox, Shotwell, LibreOffice et ‘al.
There’s also a total number of twelve beautifully designed wallpapers to choose from in Ubuntu Mate 16.04 LTS.
You can download Mate 16.04 LTS from here and see the Mate DE in its entirety in the video below.
