Novatio – The Enticing Linux Console Package That Runs Windows Games Natively

The gaming industry is an ever growing marketplace that experiences a consistent growth as big players continue to develop and improve the technologies that are incorporated in their consoles.

There has been an ever-growing competition in this space that has brought about great consoles in the Xbox line and Sony’s Play Station line as well as PC and Android gaming.

There’s one little problem, however, you are forced to upgrade your consoles more often than not and a company called Novatio plans to chance that with their console which will be supposed be an hybrid between the console and PC to maximize your use-case and options in terms of what game is available for your consumption.

What’s the big deal?

So basically, the folks behind Novatio which is actually just a team of four people, are introducing an entirely new initiative that you’ve probably never heard of.

The modular console, Navatio is expected to come bundled with its own designated proprietary system software that will be based on Debian and will be able to run Windows-based games natively.

That’s quite a huge deal when you factor in what success reputed software like Wine (that enables you to run Windows apps on Linux) has made which is nothing short of awesome but still lacking tremendously in terms of a truly bulletproof experience (an experience which is far from perfect if i may add).

As an excerpt from their Indiegogo page reads,

“Novatio is the world’s first modular gaming console based on the Linux operating system called NovOS.The main feature of this console is the possibility to play all PC and Android Games!”

The operating system is tagged with the moniker NovOS and will also be compatible with Android apps as well as the 3000 games currently available for Linux via steam, together with Origin and Uplay games. There’s currently no prototype of the actual console neither is there a demo of the capability of NovOS.

What more is there to know?

Novatio is promising upgradability* in the sense that you will be able to upgrade just about any component (CPU, Graphic Card, Hard Disk, RAM, PSU) in the console to make it future proof except that the motherboard in the console itself which will be featuring an in-house technology in form of a chip that will facilitate the support for the acclaimed functionalities and features of both the hardware and software.

Novatio team is also making it clear that their console is NOT a steam machine and will be replacing it in that respect, instead, they are looking to be a strong and viable alternative console for the future. They are asking you to hop on the bandwagon and support their vision of the console of the future.

Novatio will be available in two configurations with generic PC hardware components.

The entry model which is just “Novatio” is expected to pack an AMD FX8350, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, GTX 1050Ti, 1TB HDD, and a 1080P FHD display. The specked out variant on the other hand otherwise “Novatio Pro” will be graced with an over clockable Intel core i5 6600K CPU, 16GB DDR4 memory, a GTX 1060 with a whopping 6GB of GDDR5 video memory together with 1TB of HDD and 128GB SSD with the supported video output of 4K.

Novatio is quite an enticing package for sure but like every other crowdfunded project, I’m a little skeptical but there’s no reason for you not to show them some love if you find their concept convincing enough.

We encourage you to watch the introductory video and visit their Indiegogo page afterward to find out more about the project and the team behind it.

  1. Sorry but this just can’t exist, they can’t just magically surpass the WINE team with their small group. This is either a scam, not as good as it seems, or there’s a seriously big catch (my guess is that special chip there runs Windows “natively” for games).
